No one is complaining, we are comparing forums to different governments. I brought up North Korea, because, well, Forums are very similar. The people "worship" the leaders, in hope to get a staff spot, or respect. The dictator (Luke in this case) makes all the decisions, sometimes with help from advisers, sometimes on his own. The fact that North Korea government "kills people" isn't what we are trying to compare this forum too.

Well just the way it came across to me was degrading to the staff members of this forum: This is definitely a dictatorship. Luke is the dictator of North Korean Message Board of Coders Community. Edenwax and Ridge are his respected advisers. Luke makes sure they bow down to him. In return they get complements, respect, and popularity. I'm pretty sure that if the staff feel threatened they'll execute (ban). ;D This is very much like North Korea. Whether or not that's a good thing, is up to your own nationalist morals. I don't see this thread going anywhere good. All forums are pretty much the same on how they are ran, so really the point of this thread is not strong, and as I said it is not very positive.

I think what Nick means is it's not up to the community to tell Admins how to run their forums, users can share thoughts all that they want but at the end of the day they have no say in how the forum is ran, the Internet is a monarchy.

This thread was created to discuss the different governments that forums run on, I don't think this thread was created to tell them what to do, unless I miss-read that is.

Well over 99% of forums are ran the exact same way, so I really don't see the point of the topic.

I've never heard of a forum being ran differently, it has to be uploaded by one person after all thus making it theirs if they buy the domain, there's a chance they could pay someone but I never heard of a smaller group calling shots on a forum. You would have to build up respect with the staff for them to even consider listening to you most of the time.

Sure there's a point, we're discussing if it's possible to run a forum differently, like voting for your leaders and for changes. I think that if some forums were ran like that, they would be pretty successful.

Isn't voting on something telling them on who you want to be in charge next thus telling them what to do? I've never seen a voting place where they didn't mean squat.
So say every one here voted on Burger king vs McDonalds, and most votes when to Burger king but then someone who was already was in charge said Mcdonalds won.
Point being a Admin could do that because they were in charge and if they really wanted to could change the poll votes via MySql and we'd have no idea if it's a true vote or been messed with.
Freedom online isn't so much true due to the fact they uploaded it and can change what ever they want with out having to care what they're members want.
Funny enough most forums that turn out huge really don't care what they're community says it's just what they want to do.

-_- We're not talking scenarios like that, we're talking about honest republic forum systems, sure that could happen, but if the people actually cared it wouldn't.

Be the change you want to see in the world. If you see forums being ran the wrong way you should make a forum that runs the right way. Who knows, it could be the most successful forum out there!

Aren't we though? I've never seen a republic forum, spically remotely hosted forums.
Look at ProBoards, could we have a say in how they run they're forums or not? No, could we suggest idea on it for improvements? Sure.
When your dealing with online forums there can't be anything but monarchy because someone has to upload it and register a global admin account.
It goes for open source forums also, it's just really impossible for domains not to be open they have to be a monarchy.

Well over 99% of forums are ran the exact same way, so I really don't see the point of the topic. I mainly started it to have a better place for that initial post I wrote in the other topic. Anyways, to give this topic a different (and hopefully better) direction, it is indeed true that pretty much every message board I've seen has the same "government"/leadership structure. Anyone know why this is, or how it was decided on (because I'm too lazy to research it myself..)? Also, do you think it would be possible to implement a different type of leadership? What would be the pros and cons for something different like, say, a democracy?

What would be the pros and cons for something different like, say, a democracy? Because most forum scripts were made by one person/company and they call the shots on how it's suppose to be run. ProBoards was created by Patrick Clinger thus it would mean that he is in charge of it. It's like authoring a book, wouldn't you be upset if you put hard work into a book then someone takes a black marker and runs sentences through it and telling you how it should be published? Or it's like google telling Apple how they should run their devices.

What would be the pros and cons for something different like, say, a democracy? Well I think the main reason forums are run the way they are is because there is the owner of the forum. Just as an example, you may own a game, and your friends can play it with you, but you don't want your friends telling you how to play your own game. I know that is a bad example, but you get the idea I hope. If you were to create a democracy forum it would probably have to be a group of individuals that have the idea of the forum so there is no real owner. That way they can decide on voting as a way of resolving issues. Then there is the 'What's popular and What's right' debate. Obviously most people will vote for the popular thing. However that is not always the best option for the entire forum. Also it's easy for the members to make decisions, but it is the staff that has to do all of the work. Kind of unfair.
