NOTE SOME OF THE FACTS ARE WRONG.
We have all been through the horrifying September the forth earthquake. Some of us might have cried some of us might have screamed some of us might have even slept through it! The Canterbury earthquake or Darfield if you wish to call it that was one of the biggest around here, though there has been bigger ones in New Zealand where people also died and there was mass destruction. New Zealand has two plates under it. Christchurch and Auckland are on different plates all wanting to go different ways. It’s a tangled mess in the way the plates want to go. I’m not sure what you did when the earthquake struck. Many people have different reactions which made me wonder what people in places like England etc who hardly hear about earthquakes in their country would do.
The option was: Stay in bed, Go to door frame but stay indoors, Go to door frame and run outside when you can, Just run out side screaming. 42.8%of the people I asked would run out side screaming, 14.2% would Go to door frame and run outside when you can, 14.2% would go to door frame but stay indoors, and the other 28.5%would just stay in bed. In total there has been: 2357 aftershocks but that’s over 3.5s. They expect to find over 10,000 aftershocks under 3.5 which would make there around 12,357 aftershocks which is pretty amazing! Heres a fact: for September 2010, Geonet received 564 million hits, if you’re into web-site stuff that is around 1 terabyte of web traffic. No wonder it was always down after a big
after shock! As of the 29th September 2010 (so a while back) there had been: 9 aftershocks of magnitude 5.0 or above, 114 aftershocks of magnitude 4.0-4.9. Just more than 14,000 earthquakes are recordered in New Zealand a year, 300ish are only usually felt. In the world, there is something called the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is earthquake active all year round. This is where most of the earthquakes occur. New Zealand is right on the edge of it,
where most of the earthquake activity occurs on a regular basses. The next part of my speech will be facts about the earthquake: The fault that caused the earthquake on 4 September 2010 has been named the Greendale Fault. It is a previously unknown fault under the Canterbury Plains. This is thought to be the first time that this fault has moved in several thousand years. It is highly unlikely that it will move again, producing
another large earthquake, within the next few thousand years. It is unlikely we will have another aftershock bigger than 5.0 though scientists can’t be sure. There was no tsunami associated with the earthquake because it happened on land, and involved no displacement of the sea floor. Remember, when you’re inside your house in an earthquake: drop, cover, and hold on!

Depends where you live. Running outside would sound like the safest option, but not when there are water and gas pipes in the ground that could rupture. It's anyone's guess. But to be honest, I would grab anything valuable and get out.
