I find just trying works. With the social network I'll say now I'm not very good at PHP but with drive and determination I seem to be getting somewhere. Sometimes just doing helps me learn.

Trial and error is what makes me learn best. It also helps to be interested in what you're learning too.

Often, it helps if I have external motivation to learn something. I tend to get distracted easily/procrastinate when trying to learn something on my own (as far as large things/projects go).

Step 1. Buy a book. Step 2. Read book. Step 3. Try stuff learnt from book, and go back if you can't remember it all (which you will undoubtedly have to).

We have to import them. Amazon and book depository? Also eBooks. There are heaps of text books avaliable in ePub/etc format.
