I usually use <br /> because when I started getting into coding, that became the new standard with XHTML, so I got into the habit of writing it that way. I am not sure which way people use the most now, but I see quite a bit of both.

I never used XHTML, so I never saw the appeal of <br />.
FWIW, I usually try to use paragraph tags over breaks, whenever possible. Not sure if there's a real advantage or not for using one over the other (besides the fact that paragraph tags can have styles associated with them).

As long as you don't mix them, who cares?

Usually I put then right after a line of text so it looks like
<html> <body>
<h1>My First Heading</h1> <br />
<p>My first paragraph.</p> <br />
</body> </html>
Or
<html> <body>
<h1>My First Heading</h1> <br /> <p>My first paragraph.</p>
</body> </html>

Typically unless you define the property in the css.

<h1> already does a line break, doesnt it? Yes, as do paragraph tags (unless, I'm assuming, you define otherwise as Nick stated)
